-
- GoldenGate is SGI's Data Conversion Service. It recognizes
- that people need to work with the many different file and
- data formats for digital media data. Applications typically
- support import and export of a limited set of formats, and
- often users have to resort to the intermediate step of using
- a conversion utility to prepare data for use in their
- projects.
-
- The premise of GoldenGate is that end-users should be able
- to use any application with any piece of digital media data
- without knowing about any limitations of the program that
- created it, or the program they are now using it with. The
- need for conversion will never go away, but with GoldenGate
- it can be made to happen without intervention from the user.
-
- GoldenGate provides a system-wide registry of converters
- that can be extended as more converters become available and
- demands change. It provides an API for applications to
- invoke data conversion directly on either files or streams
- of data. Most significantly for many end-users, GoldenGate
- is integrated with the X toolkit in IRIX 6.2 and later to
- provide automatic conversion of data during selection
- transfer operations. The result is that many cut/copy/paste
- and drag/drop operations that were impossible before now
- occur automatically.
-
- To take advantage of the Xt support, applications need only
- use standard Xt and Motif mechanisms, and the right target
- names. SGI is proposing new standard targets for digital
- media use as an X Consortium standard.
